speech and language development

Learning how to talk is a crucial milestone of children’s language development. Your baby’s little sounds and expressions will eventually morph into words that can be used to communicate a variety of needs, wants, thoughts, and opinions. As a parent, you play an important role in the development of your child’s language skills. Here are some ways to enrich your little one’s speech and language development.

Use language daily

It’s essential to expose your child to language every day. Take time to read books, tell stories, ask questions, and provide language-rich experiences for your little one. You can even make learning fun by adding songs and playing games. You can also narrate what you’re doing as you go about your day together.

For example, as you pack your child’s diaper bag for a trip to the grocery store, say, “We need to buy bread and milk today.” Then when you’re at the market, point out which fruits and vegetables you grab from the shelves. This type of exposure to language will help to deepen your child’s language awareness and comprehension.

Be responsive

It’s also important to respond to your child’s actions with language, regardless of how young your little one is. Even if children can’t speak yet, they are still taking in pieces of language from their environment. If you respond to your child’s coos and gurgles with words, they will learn that talking is an effective way to communicate.

Read books together

One of the simplest and most important things you can do to enrich your little one’s language development is reading books together. Children learn language best when they hear it being used in a variety of contexts. And what better way to expose your child to language than through stories? Reading books helps boost your child’s growing vocabulary, and exposes children to a variety of topics as it strengthens their comprehension skills.

Talk about what you see

When you’re out and about with your child, talk about the things you see. Point out various colors, shapes, sizes, and textures. This is another great way to help your child develop vocabulary and language comprehension skills.

Tell stories

When children hear stories, they are introduced to new vocabulary and language structures. Stories also help children develop comprehension skills. You can engage your little one in fun conversations by telling your own stories. You can even spruce up your stories with fictional characters, conflict, adventure, and happy endings!

Sing songs and play games

Singing songs is another excellent way to expose children to language. Songs are a great tool for enhancing language development because they help children learn various parts of speech like nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions, and conjunctions.

You can also turn learning language skills into different types of games! For example, invite your child to point to various body parts as you name them, or speak nonsense words with funny accents and have your child repeat them back to you in the same way.

Create opportunities to practice language at home

Your home is a great place for language exploration and learning. You can create a language-rich environment by adding language-focused activities into your daily routine.

For example, introduce children to new words by asking them to put away their toys after playing with them, invite them to help you set the table for dinner, or help you in the garden. These types of tasks provide opportunities for children to use language in new and meaningful ways.

Carve out time for floor play

One of the best ways to encourage language development in toddlers is through playing on the floor. During floor play, children have plenty of opportunities to explore their surroundings and communicate with others through language.

There are so many fun language activities you can do! For example, you might ask children questions about what they’re playing, have them pretend to be animals or people, or have a conversation using puppets.

Observe and imitate

Children also learn language by observing and imitating the language spoken by people around them. You can help your child develop language skills by modeling correct grammar and pronunciation. Be sure to also use lots of gestures and facial expressions to help further illustrate what you’re saying with words.

Be positive and patient

Acquiring language skills takes time, so be positive and encouraging when your child is learning. Children develop language skills at different rates, so resist the temptation to compare your child to others. Be sure to recognize children’s effort and praise them for their accomplishments.

Providing opportunities for young children’s speech and language development is important for their future success. These ten tips provide simple ways to create a language-rich environment for children, and help them develop the skills they need to communicate effectively throughout their lives.
